CONFOCAL & ELECTRON MICROSCOPY LAB

SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

The Confocal & EM Core Facility also assists and trains investigators and students in the preparation of biological samples for Scanning Electron Microscopy.  This includes sample fixation , post fixation, sample dehydration, critical point drying, or chemical sublimation.  Samples are mounted on microscope stubs, and coated with a thin layer of gold-palladium to prevent electron beam damage and sample charging while in the microscope.  The Microscopy is performed on a Phillips XLS30 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, located in the Princeton Materials Institute Building, a short walk across campus (See PMI Link).  This microscope provides our researchers digital and analytical imaging technology.
