Dr. Claire Fraser-Liggett received her Ph.D. from the State University of New
York at Buffalo. Dr. Fraser-Liggett served for nearly ten years as President and Director
of The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Rockville, MD, where she oversaw the
sequencing of multiple microbial genomes (including human and animal pathogens
implicated in cholera, anthrax, and malaria) and helped usher in the era of comparative
genomics. In 2007, Dr. Fraser-Liggett was selected to head the Institute of Genome
Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Dr. Fraser-Liggett’s scientific contributions have led to new diagnostic,
therapeutic, and preventative technologies, and her work has broad implications for
global health and infectious disease research. She is a member of the National Science
Advisory Board for Biosecurity and the National Research Council's Committee on
Metagenomics, serves on the editorial boards of various scientific journals, has received
multiple honorary degrees and prestigious awards for her accomplishments, and is an
elected member of both the American Academy of Microbiology and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). For the past ten years, she has
been the most frequently cited author in the world for scientific papers in microbiology.
